There are days when being an adult is wonderful.
And then there are days when you really don’t want to be one.
Today is one of those days.
I’ve checked into Thai Adult Baby Nursery, and for the next 24 hours, somebody else is in charge.
No emails.
No decisions.
No cooking.
No worrying about what comes next.
Today, I’m Baby.
7:00 AM: Good Morning, Baby
The first thing I notice when I wake is that I’m not in my usual bed.
I’m in my crib.
For a moment, I lie there wondering what time it is and what I’m supposed to be doing.
Then I hear a gentle knock.
“Good morning, baby.”
Mummy comes over to see how I am and starts the morning routine.
First comes my nappy check.
It’s time for a change, so I’m taken to the changing area and given a fresh nappy, powder and clean clothes.
There’s something wonderfully reassuring about knowing that I don’t have to keep checking the clock or worrying about it myself.
Mummy will take care of that.
7:30 AM: Bottle Time
Breakfast arrives in a bottle.
Normally, breakfast means deciding what I want, making it, eating it and clearing everything away.
Today I simply sit back and let Mummy do it.
There’s something wonderfully liberating about having absolutely nothing to organise.
I don’t even have to hold the bottle if I don’t want to.
I can simply relax.
The day outside continues without me.
And for once, that’s perfectly fine.
8:30 AM: Let the Fun Begin
After breakfast, I’m ready to play.
The nursery suddenly seems enormous.
There are toys everywhere.
I crawl into the playpen and start exploring.
There are rattles, soft toys, blocks and colourful things that make noises when I press them.
Then I spot the rocking horse.
Game on.
A few minutes later I’m rocking away, laughing at myself because this is exactly what I came here for.
Nobody is looking at me strangely.
Nobody is asking what an adult is doing on a rocking horse.
I’m simply Baby.
And Baby is having a very good morning.
9:00 AM: Nappy Check
After some energetic play, it’s time for another nappy check.
Mummy checks that everything is comfortable and changes me if necessary.
It’s a small part of the day, but it’s also one of the things that makes the nursery experience feel different from simply dressing up and playing at home.
The care continues whether I’m thinking about it or not.
Fresh nappy, back into the playpen, and off I go again.
10:00 AM: Nap Attack
Apparently all that playing is exhausting.
Mummy notices before I do.
“Baby needs a nap.”
I’m not convinced.
I announce that I’m not tired.
Five minutes later I’m lying in my crib.
Ten minutes later I’m asleep.
That’s the funny thing about being looked after.
Sometimes someone else notices what you need before you do.
11:00 AM: Wake-Up and Nappy Change
I wake up feeling refreshed.
Before lunch, there’s another routine nappy check.
This time I need a change, so I’m lifted out of the crib and taken through the familiar routine.
Clean nappy.
A little powder.
Fresh clothes if needed.
Then it’s time for lunch.
11:30 AM: Lunch in the Highchair
I’m strapped into the highchair and lunch is ready.
Normally I would be thinking about work, messages, appointments and everything else waiting for me.
Instead I’m concentrating on lunch.
That’s my entire responsibility.
Eat.
Smile.
Enjoy.
It’s wonderfully uncomplicated.
1:00 PM: Another Nappy Check
Before heading outside, Mummy checks my nappy again.
If I need changing, it happens before we leave.
There’s something reassuring about knowing that I’m not going to be left uncomfortable while we’re out.
Once I’m clean, dry and comfortable, I’m ready for my adventure.
1:15 PM: Baby’s Big Adventure
I’m wrapped up comfortably and placed in the stroller.
The moment we leave the nursery, everything feels different.
The Thai sunshine is warm.
There’s a breeze.
People are going about their ordinary day.
And I’m sitting there enjoying the ride.
It’s surprisingly exciting.
I’m seeing the world from a completely different perspective.
No driving.
No navigating.
No deciding where we’re going.
I’m just along for the adventure.
2:30 PM: Back to the Nursery
By the time we return, I’m ready for another bottle and some quiet time.
Of course, the first thing Mummy does is check my nappy.
After being out and about, a fresh change is especially welcome.
Clean and comfortable again, I settle down with a favourite toy.
There’s music playing softly in the background.
Someone brings me a bottle.
And suddenly I realise I’ve spent most of the day without thinking about my adult life at all.
That’s the real magic of it.
The outside world hasn’t disappeared.
I’ve simply stopped carrying it around for a while.
3:30 PM: Afternoon Nappy Check
Another couple of hours have passed, so it’s time for another check.
Sometimes I’m perfectly dry and comfortable.
Other times, I need changing.
Either way, there’s no fuss and no embarrassment.
It’s simply part of being cared for.
Once I’m sorted, it’s back to having fun.
4:00 PM: Playtime Round Two
A second wind arrives.
Back into the playpen.
More toys.
More crawling.
A little time on the bouncer.
Then the rocking horse gets another turn.
Apparently being a baby is hard work.
Fortunately, the nursery has plenty of opportunities for naps.
And plenty of clean nappies too.
5:30 PM: Dinner
Dinner is another chance to be completely looked after.
I’m back in the highchair.
Mummy is doing the feeding.
I don’t have to worry about portions, washing dishes or what I’m going to eat tomorrow.
I just enjoy dinner.
Before settling down for the evening, there’s another nappy check and change if needed.
Clean, dry and comfortable, I’m ready for the quieter part of the day.
6:30 PM: Bath and Bedtime
The day has caught up with me.
After a bath, I’m given a fresh bedtime nappy and changed into cosy sleepwear.
The nursery is quieter now.
The toys have been put away.
The lights are softer.
Everything feels calm.
There is nowhere I need to be.
Nothing I need to accomplish.
Nothing I need to fix.
7:30 PM: One Last Bottle
The final bottle of the day is waiting.
I’m tired enough that I don’t even try to pretend otherwise.
I settle down comfortably and let the day slowly disappear.
Before bed, Mummy gives me one final nappy check to make sure I’m clean, dry and comfortable for the night.
For someone who normally spends every day making decisions, being told that I don’t have to make any is strangely wonderful.
8:00 PM: Goodnight, Baby
Back in the crib.
Fresh bedtime nappy.
Clean sleepwear.
Blanket tucked around me.
Favourite toy nearby.
A quiet goodnight.
I close my eyes.
Tomorrow I’ll wake up and eventually return to being an adult again.
But tonight?
I’m just Baby.
And Baby has had a fantastic day.
Every Two Hours, Baby Gets Checked
One of the things that makes a nursery stay different from simply playing at home is the continuity of care.
Throughout the day, regular nappy checks are part of the routine, generally around every two hours and whenever there’s a reason to check sooner.
If a nappy needs changing, it is changed promptly.
There’s no need for Baby to worry about remembering.
No need to keep track of time.
No need to feel embarrassed about asking.
It’s simply another part of being looked after.
For someone who wants to experience a genuine nursery routine, those ordinary little details can make a surprisingly big difference.
Why Does It Feel So Good?
Perhaps that’s the biggest surprise.
The fun isn’t really about the toys, the crib or even the nappies.
Those things are part of the experience, certainly.
But the real pleasure is having permission to stop being responsible for everything.
For one day, somebody else makes the decisions.
Somebody else prepares the meals.
Somebody else notices when you’re tired.
Somebody else keeps an eye on your nappy.
Somebody else says, “Come on, baby, it’s bedtime.”
And you can simply smile and go along with it.
Sometimes adulthood can wait until tomorrow.
Today, there are toys to play with, naps to take, bottles to enjoy and plenty of nursery adventures waiting around the corner.
Baby has another nappy check scheduled.
And apparently, that’s perfectly fine.
