At Thai Adult bABy Nursery, we meet adults who want something rather different from the usual holiday experience.

For some, it is simply the chance to spend a few days being cared for as a baby. For others, wearing nappies is an important part of their everyday identity and they want to experience what it is like to be looked after around the clock.

Over the years, I have learned that there is a big difference between putting on a nappy for an afternoon and actually making nappies part of your 24/7 life.

So, from my perspective at Thai Adult bABy Nursery, here are ten things I think every adult baby should consider before deciding to live in nappies full-time.

1. Don’t spend your time worrying about everyone noticing

This is probably one of the biggest concerns people have.

They imagine that the moment they walk outside, everyone will somehow know that they are wearing a nappy.

Usually, that simply isn’t the case.

Most people are far too occupied with their own lives to spend their day examining somebody else’s clothing. If your clothes fit properly and you dress sensibly, your nappy can remain your private business.

Loose-fitting clothing can help, particularly if you are wearing a high-capacity nappy. Longer shirts and darker trousers can also make things less noticeable.

And there is another little lesson I have learned: don’t keep checking it.

If you are constantly pulling at your clothes, reaching down to adjust yourself or looking worried, people are much more likely to notice that something is bothering you.

Put your nappy on properly, dress comfortably and then get on with being yourself.

2. Being a baby doesn’t mean forgetting about hygiene

There is something very comforting about being looked after.

But good care also means keeping clean.

A wet nappy needs changing when appropriate, and a soiled nappy should be changed promptly. Personal hygiene is particularly important when you are wearing a nappy for many hours.

At the nursery, we believe that being cared for should mean being properly cared for.

That includes regular checks, cleaning and making sure you are comfortable.

Nobody should feel embarrassed about needing a change. It is simply part of the experience.

For anyone living 24/7 in nappies at home, the same principle applies. Have everything you need readily available so that changing is easy rather than something you keep putting off.

3. Look after your bottom

Your skin deserves just as much attention as the rest of you.

Spending long periods in a nappy creates a warm and sometimes damp environment, and that can lead to irritation if you don’t take care of your skin.

Cleaning thoroughly at changes, drying properly and using an appropriate barrier cream when needed can make a considerable difference.

Don’t wait until you have a painful rash before doing something about it.

At Thai Adult bABy Nursery, one of the things we try to provide is that feeling of being looked after properly. Good baby care isn’t just about nappies, bottles, cots and cuddles. It is also about the little things that keep you healthy and comfortable.

Adults deserve that same level of care.

4. Terry towelling nappies and plastic pants: an alternative worth considering

When people think about wearing nappies 24/7, they often immediately think about disposable adult nappies.

But there is another option that I personally prefer: traditional terry towelling nappies worn with plastic pants.

This is what I use myself, and there are some very good reasons for it.

The biggest advantage is that terry towelling nappies can be washed and used again and again. Instead of throwing away several disposable nappies every day, you simply wash your nappies and put them back into service.

For someone who wears nappies every day, that can make a considerable difference to the amount of waste produced.

There is also a financial advantage over time. You have to buy a supply of cloth nappies in the beginning, and you need to allow for washing, detergent, water and electricity, but once you have them, they can be used repeatedly. With disposables, you are continually buying another packet.

The advantages of terry towelling

For me, the main benefits are:

  • Much less waste, because the nappy isn’t thrown away after one use.
  • Reusable, meaning one nappy can be washed and worn many times.
  • Potentially cheaper over the long term, particularly for someone wearing nappies every day.
  • Simple and traditional, without relying on complicated disposable designs.
  • You can build up a good supply and always have clean nappies ready.
  • They can be very comfortable, particularly when folded and fitted correctly.

And there is something quite satisfying about putting a freshly washed terry nappy on. It is a very different experience from opening another disposable packet.

But there are disadvantages too

Cloth nappies aren’t perfect.

The initial cost of buying enough nappies can be higher than simply buying one packet of disposables. You also need somewhere to store the clean nappies and somewhere hygienic to keep the used ones until they are washed.

Then there is the washing.

If you are wearing cloth nappies 24/7, you will have a regular laundry routine. They need to be washed properly and dried thoroughly, and that means using water, detergent, electricity and your time.

They can also be bulkier than some modern disposable products, and you need a suitable waterproof cover.

That’s where plastic pants come in.

A good pair of plastic pants provides a waterproof outer layer over the terry nappy and helps protect your clothing and bedding. They are reusable too, so they can simply be cleaned and used again.

Plastic pants do have their own pros and cons. They are inexpensive compared with constantly buying disposable waterproof products, but they can become warm, particularly in hot weather. They also need to be cleaned regularly and replaced when they become worn or damaged.

For me, the choice is easy

I personally choose terry towelling nappies and plastic pants.

For someone who intends to wear nappies occasionally, disposables may be the simplest solution. There is no washing and you can simply dispose of the nappy after changing.

But if you are going to wear nappies every day, the economics and the environmental impact are worth thinking about.

I would rather wash a terry nappy and use it again than throw another disposable nappy into the rubbish.

It also means that my nappy supply is something I can manage myself. I know how many I have, I know they can be washed and reused, and I am not constantly throwing money into the bin along with yesterday’s nappies.

For me, terry towelling is not just an economical choice. It is part of the traditional nursery experience that I enjoy.

5. Sooner or later, you will probably experience a leak

Even the best nappy in the world can leak.

It happens.

Sometimes it is because the nappy wasn’t fitted correctly. Sometimes you have simply asked more of it than it can handle. Sometimes you move in a way that causes a gap around a leg or the back.

Don’t panic when it happens.

Learn what works for you.

Different brands have different shapes, absorbency levels and fits. A nappy that works wonderfully for one person may not work nearly as well for somebody else.

Waterproof pants can provide an additional layer of protection, particularly at night, and if you sleep in nappies regularly, a waterproof mattress protector is a very sensible idea.

The secret isn’t finding a nappy that can never leak.

It is being prepared when one eventually does.

6. 24/7 nappies require a little planning

Living in nappies sounds wonderfully simple until you start thinking about everyday life.

Where will you change?

Where will you keep your spare nappies?

What will you do with the used ones?

What happens when you are travelling?

What happens if you are out for the whole day?

These are not reasons not to do it. They are simply things you need to think about.

At the nursery, this is one of the advantages of having somebody else take care of those practical details.

You don’t have to spend your day thinking about where the next change is coming from. You can concentrate on the experience itself.

That is one of the reasons some of our guests enjoy staying for several days rather than simply trying the experience for an afternoon.

7. Don’t forget the cost

Nappies are an everyday expense when you are wearing them every day.

One packet may not seem particularly expensive, but multiply that by weeks and months and the total can become significant.

You also need to consider wipes, creams, waterproof pants, disposal bags and other supplies.

If you are thinking seriously about living in nappies permanently, work out your likely monthly cost before you start.

There is nothing wrong with enjoying the adult baby lifestyle, but it is always better to make the decision with your eyes open.

8. The cheapest nappy isn’t always the cheapest option

I have always believed that comfort and reliability matter more than simply buying the cheapest product available.

A very inexpensive nappy that leaks frequently may cost you more in the long run through additional changes, damaged clothing and inconvenience.

A good fit is particularly important.

Don’t automatically assume that the nappy with the largest advertised capacity is the best one either. Real life is rather different from laboratory testing.

Movement, body shape, how you sleep and how you actually use the nappy all make a difference.

Find something that works for you.

Your bottom will thank you.

9. You will be surprised by how much waste you create

This is something people often don’t consider until they actually start wearing nappies every day.

A single used adult nappy can be surprisingly bulky. Multiply that by several changes a day and suddenly you have quite a collection.

You need a sensible system for storing and disposing of them hygienically.

This becomes even more important when travelling.

Don’t assume that a small hotel bathroom bin is going to cope with a week’s worth of adult nappies. Plan ahead and make suitable arrangements.

It may not be the most glamorous part of being an adult baby, but it is part of the reality.

10. Wearing nappies doesn’t automatically make you incontinent

There are many stories and claims on the internet about permanent nappy use causing inevitable incontinence.

I would be very cautious about believing everything you read.

Simply choosing to wear nappies does not mean that you are going to become medically incontinent.

However, if someone relies on nappies constantly and stops paying attention to their normal bladder signals and toileting habits, they may notice changes in their habits or urgency.

If you experience genuine changes in bladder or bowel control, pain, unusual urgency or other symptoms, don’t simply assume that it is because you are an adult baby. Get proper medical advice.

There is no need to turn something that should be comforting into a health problem.

11. Above everything else, it should make you feel good

This is probably the most important thing I can say.

Being an adult baby is not a competition.

There is no medal for wearing a nappy for the longest period of time.

There is no rule saying that once you have worn nappies 24/7 you can never take them off again.

And there is certainly no reason to feel that you have failed if you discover that full-time nappy wearing isn’t for you.

Perhaps you enjoy being an adult baby at home.

Perhaps you enjoy going away for a weekend and being looked after.

Perhaps you want to spend a few days at Thai Adult bABy Nursery and experience what it feels like to put down the responsibilities of everyday adult life and simply be cared for.

Or perhaps you really do want the full 24/7 experience.

All of those choices are perfectly valid.

And Don’t Forget the Powder

At Thai Adult bABy Nursery

For me, the important thing is not simply the nappy.

The nappy is part of the experience, but it is the feeling behind it that matters.

It is being able to relax.

It is knowing that someone else is looking after the practical things for a while.

It is being able to wake up and know that you don’t have to organise everything yourself.

It is being checked, changed, dressed, fed and cared for.

Most of all, it is having a safe place where you don’t have to spend your entire time being the responsible adult.

That is what I want Thai Adult bABy Nursery to provide.

A real nursery experience for adults who simply want to be cared for.

Whether you come for a few days, a week, or longer, my hope is that you leave feeling rested, comfortable and perhaps having discovered a little more about yourself along the way.
