1st in a series of articles of life in a nursery.

I wake to the sound of Mummy opening the curtains.

“Good morning, sleepyhead.”

I pull the covers up a little further and pretend I haven’t heard her.

Mummy laughs.

“I know you’re awake.”

I can’t help smiling.

She sits on the edge of the bed and gives me a cuddle before pulling the covers back. The morning is warm and quiet, and for a few moments there is nowhere I need to be and nothing I need to do.

Mummy is here.

That’s all that matters.

“Come on, baby. Let’s get you ready.”

There is something rather lovely about having Mummy choose what I’m going to wear. She has already put a little pile of clothes on the chair. Today she has chosen one of my favourite outfits.

I hold it up.

“That one?”

Mummy nods.

“Yes, darling. I thought you’d like it.”

“Yeth mummy, I do.”

Soon I’m dressed, cuddled and ready for breakfast.

And then I see the highchair.

I grin.

Mummy catches me looking.

“Yes, I know exactly where you want to go.”

She pulls the chair out and I climb in. The big tray goes across in front of me and suddenly I feel like the day has properly begun. Mummy picks up a large baby bib and ties it around my neck, I giggle and wriggle and point at the teddies dancing on my bib.

Breakfast arrives.

A drink.

Something tasty to eat.

And, because Mummy knows I like it, a bottle as well she feeds me in the chair.

We chat while I eat. Well, Mummy chats. I babble and eat, I am far too busy concentrating on breakfast.

There is a little bit of toast left on the tray.

Mummy looks at it.

“Did you enjoy that?”

I nod. “Fank ou mummy I babble

“Good. Now let’s get you cleaned up.”

A little wipe of the face, a check that everything is comfortable, no wet nappy and my bib removed, and I’m ready for the most important part of the morning.

“Playtime!”

The playroom is waiting.

My teddy is sitting exactly where I left him yesterday.

I pick him up and give him a cuddle.

Mummy sits on the floor beside me.

“What shall we play with first?”

The answer is obvious.

The building blocks.

We start making a tower.

One block.

Two.

Three.

Four.

Five.

Mummy adds another.

It wobbles.

I look at her.

She looks at me.

We both know what’s coming. “Timber” mummy shouts.

CRASH!

The whole thing falls over.

We laugh.

“Well, that didn’t last very long,” Mummy says.

So we build another one.

Later, we move on to the rocking horse and mummy helps me on, I rock back and forth a relaxing motion. Then the toys, my fire engine, ding ding. Then a story. Then something else catches my attention. The baby swing just sitting in the corner, I crawl towards it as mummy catches up. “OK, baby you want the swing.” She opens the guard and I climb in, its got a horsee head which I hold on to as mummy gently pushes me. Weeeeeeeee Weeeeeeeeeeee up and down, weeeeeee weeeeeeeeee up and down. Mummy talks softly to me, I’m so relaxed.

That’s the wonderful thing about play.

There doesn’t have to be a reason for it.

You can simply enjoy it.

Eventually Mummy looks at me and smiles.

“Would you like to go to the park?”

Would I?

Yes pwees mummy, pwees pwees, I would.

Mummy takes me back to the nursery, checks my nappy and finds it wet. “Come on baby, up on the change table, mummy needs to change you before we go out.”

Up I climb and mummy pulls down my plastic panties and unfastens the nappy pins, my terry nappy is soaking wet.

“My, what a wet baby you are, but thats what babies do, isn’t it my sweet,” kissing me and blowing raspberries on my tummy.

I giggle and gurgle and kick my legs, while mummy wipes me down with baby wipes.

“Good baby, now lift your bottom so I can get this wet one out and slip in a clean nappy,” mummy says.

Slipping the clean one under, she pulls the middle part up between my legs and brings the left wing into the middle, taking a nappy safety pin out of her mouth, mummy fastens the nappy, repeating with the right side and checking the that it won’t fall off as soon as I stand.

“Right baby what are we going to put on next, oh thats right these cute sissy panties with lots of frills and embroidered fairies.”

I squirm with delight as mummy holds them up for me to see.

After they are on, mummy produces a matching baby dress, again with lots of frills, “Here baby, I think this is perfect for you.”

I put my arms out for mummy to put on me, knowing we will be going out soon, will mummy take me like this, would I dare?

“OK, baby we are going to the park, are you happy dressed as you are?”

“I’m scared mummy,” I replied.

“No, problem, I’ll put you in the stroller so you can hide and only get out when no one is around.”

I smile and mummy gets the stroller ready, “We mustn’t for get your nappy bag, just in case we need a change, there is a baby change room at the park, so if need be we can use that.

Soon we’re heading out together.

Mummy has packed everything we need, and I’m excited about getting out into the sunshine.

At the park there are swings and things to explore. We walk around together, me in the stroller and mummy pushing, stopping every so often to point out interesting things like flowers, bugs, and the ducks and eventually we come to the pond find a nice place to sit.

Mummy has brought a little snack.

I sit beside her looking at the pond and the ducks coming in the hope we will feed them or we will drop some crumbs and they will snatch them up.

Mummy has brought some stale bread and I feed the ducks, they are happy quacking and eating, then mummy starts singing “5 little ducks went out one day, over the hill and far away, mother duck said quack quack quack quack and only 4 little ducks came back that day.

I clap my hands and try to sing along.

For a while we simply watch the world go by.

There is no hurry.

No schedule.

No need to be somewhere else.

Just Mummy and me having a lovely afternoon.

When we get back to the nursery, I’m tired.

Mummy knows immediately.

“I think somebody needs a nap.”

I pretend that I don’t.

Mummy smiles.

“I think somebody does.”

And she’s right.

After a cuddle, a story and a clean nappy, I settle down for my afternoon sleep.

The last thing I remember is Mummy saying:

“Sleep well, baby. I’ll be here when you wake up.”

And she is.

When I wake, the afternoon is still ahead of us.

There are toys waiting.

Nanny has arrived.

There is laughter coming from the playroom.

And somewhere in the nursery, Mummy is already deciding what we’re going to do next.

I smile.

Because tomorrow I’ll have to go back to being a grown-up again.

But today?

Today I’m just Mummy’s baby.

And sometimes, that’s a very nice place to be. 🌸
